ENKELADOS (Enceladus) was a Gigante who battled Athene in the War of the Giants. When he fled the battlefield, Athene pursued and crushed him beneath the Sicilian Mount Aitna (Etna). According to others, it was the giant Typhoeus who was buried beneath the volcano.
Enkelados's name is derived from the Greek verb enkeleuô, meaning "to urge on" or "to sound the charge."
